Action!

Lights! Camera! It’s time to take action! You may be hanging out this summer enjoying the latest blockbuster films, but it’s time to make an appearance in the next scene of our movement. Perhaps even take a starring role. Are you ready for your close-up?

Yinzercation has been hard at work the last couple of months with our new coalition, Great Public Schools (GPS) Pittsburgh. This is the group that sponsored the Rolling Rally in May and the bus trip to Harrisburg in June. Founding partners include Yinzercation, PA Interfaith Impact Network, One Pittsburgh, SEIU, Action United, and the Pittsburgh Federation of Teachers. We will launch a new web site very soon detailing our vision for public education and how we can fight together for great community schools.

Right now we are planning an exciting series of events for the next two months. This is where we need your star power.

July 31, 2013: GPS Pittsburgh action meeting. Come help plan two key actions in our community: a Back to School event and our first Pittsburgh Public School Board action of the year. We have the outlines and need your help to fill in the details. This is your chance to be an integral part of this exciting new coalition! We will also be rolling out our new community survey that evening and need your help developing a distribution plan. The survey will be the basis for our community plan, to be presented to the public and key decision makers this fall. This is a hands-on, action meeting. 6:30PM at the PFT (10 S. 19th St., 15203, South Side).

August 7, 14, 21, 2013: GPS Pittsburgh strategic leadership development. Calling all student, parent, and community leaders: We need you at one of these sessions as we work to hit the the school year running. Evenings: time and location TBD.  If you are interested or know someone who should attend one of these sessions, please send us a message.

August 26, 2013: Back to School action! GPS Pittsburgh is planning a major action to demonstrate how much our communities love and need their public schools. This could literally be your chance to “hug a school” with hundreds of your neighbors. Maybe we can set a world record? (We’ll share details and get your help with the planning on July 31st.)

September 16, 2013: We are hosting education historian Diane Ravitch! She will be here in Pittsburgh on the day that her new book is released: “Reign of Error: The Hoax of the Privatization Movement and the Danger to America’s Public Schools.” 6PM, free and open to the public. Location TBA. This is a huge opportunity to hear Dr. Ravitch and to build our movement. Hosted by the partners of GPS Pittsburgh. Co-sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh School of Education and the PSEA. See, I told you this was huge.

The scene is set, you’ve got your cue, now … “Action!”
